This is my favorite part of a wedding! It's the time when everyone is more relaxed and CELEBRATES!!! I love the energy and excitement as well as the challenge of shooting in low-light.
For most of the day I try to photograph using just natural light. Once the sun sets is when I pull out my lights and play. My goal is always to balance my light to compliment the existing light. I love it when our clients invest in uplighting because THAT is when we can create more interesting and compelling images that our clients flip out for.
There is a lot of effort that goes into lighting a scene. When you and your guest are enjoying the reception, I get into full introvert-mode and simply photograph candid moments as they are happening. If I am not pleased with what I see on the back of my camera I'll make micro adjustments to my lighting until I am happy. It's the nerdy / technical side of me that is never quite pleased until it is perfect.
Let's face it, you spent a lot of time and effort planning your wedding. The Reception is the part of the day that you (and especially your guests) look forward to. It's that part that you may not remember with total clarity, but will appreciate having photos of.
